Transforming Self-Limiting Beliefs

By Jan Fowler, October 24, 2017 Leave a Comment

“What you think, you create.  What you feel, you attract.  What you imagine, you become.”

By loving and appreciating ourselves, others will love and appreciate us as well.

This is our gift from the universe, and it’s really that simple.

In other words, we all have the power to transform our self-limiting thoughts and beliefs once we become conscious of how they defeat our hopes and dreams.

So why not do what we can to remove barriers which prevent us from reaching our goals?

To help us get started, we might begin with the self-limiting belief, “Oh I’ll never meet someone who’s just right for me!”

From time to time, we all hear such chattering monkeys inside our heads.

When that happens, the best thing to do is nip them in the bud with lightning-rod speed, affirming out loud, “I am never too old to meet someone new and wonderful who happens to be just right for me!  It could even happen today.”

“I feel useless, with no purpose or value,” is another self-limiting belief and put-down which some people find easy to believe about themselves.

My suggestion is rephrase to “I still have so much to offer others.  For example, I could visit a skilled nursing facility anytime and sit and visit with residents who are confined.  I can laugh, sing, or read with them, or just listen as they reminisce about their lives.”

“When we are ready to make positive changes in our lives, we attract whatever we need to help us.”

 Louise Hay

“I look terrible and am unattractive to others” could be changed to, “My life is unfolding in new ways.  It may be time for me to climb  out of this rut by getting a haircut, firming up at the gym, then treating myself to some new and stylish clothes.

Just yesterday, I overheard a woman at a meeting remark that her life felt empty.

I was saddened to hear that she felt this way and afterward offered a few encouraging words, “You know, you strike me as a person with a great deal to offer.  And there are so many organizations out there which support worthy causes who are always looking for volunteers such as you to help them benefit others. Why not contact Meals on Wheels, hospitals, schools, libraries, even the YMCA which, among other things, provides after-school care to elementary school children?”

Whenever I hear “I’m very lonely”, “I just can’t stand to go home to an empty house”, it arouses a great deal of empathy in me and I generally encourage the person to expand their belief to, “I intend to find new and meaningful ways to get out of my house every day by signing up at the gym, enrolling in a class–maybe photography or cooking — or signing up for a group bus trip to gourmet restaurants, museums, art galleries, etc.

When we accept who we are and recognize our attributes, we act and think with greater confidence.  Self-respect and self-approval add a bounce to our step, a smile to our greetings, and a twinkle to our eye.  They make us attractive to others so that others notice us and make efforts to seek us out.

Love always flourishes when we share it with others, right?

“Keep your focus on how you want to feel and let the universe fill in the details.”

Abraham Hicks
